Choosing The Right Pet For You Part 4

Other pets you might consider

Fish, lizards, and turtles are three other types of pets that are typically low maintenance except for cleaning the tank, but they do need to be cleaned regularly and have a stimulating environment.

They also have special foods, and in the case of lizards and other reptiles, might even need to have live food such as crickets and even mice, which is not for the squeamish.

Birds are also pretty low maintenance apart from the cage cleaning. They do need some interaction, and can be trained to speak, go on the finger, and be affectionate. Training does take time, but it is nice to have a friendly bird rather than one who bites you every time you try to pick it up.

They need care of their toenails and beaks, and need food and warmth and a stimulating environment.  Birds can vary widely in price too depending on how exotic, and some can have health issues, so as with different breeds of dogs and cats, know the basics about health, longevity, and care requirements before you get a fish, reptile, or bird.

With fish, be vigilant about which species can go with which, or else you might end up with an expensive meal for one very very large fish.
